Cwtch up

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I like the fact you have web access over there.
I like knowing you will wonder if I’ve posted anything, and check.
And although I can’t call, as you’ll be in the middle of some very posh dinner of sardines or something, I like knowing that one of the last things you did before you left was [...]

Easy money

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Tonight I partook in a bit of Market Research. An hour and a half in a room with six others talking about the environment and recycling. Hardly taxing as it is a subject I happily garble on about to all and sundry. For this, I was paid the princely sum of £30. [...]

Designer humans

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

I have been pondering more on opposable thumbs. My thumb is improving quickly, and so an exchangeable thumb isn’t quite as essential as it was a few days ago, yet I still find myself wondering how fabulous it would be to have two opposable thumbs like Koala do.
I have been telling anyone who will listen. Koala [...]

Headlines

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

You know when you misread something out of the corner of your eye?
I was browsing the BBC news website when the two main headlines read:

Militia suspected on Iraq kidnappings
Pope meets parents of Madeleine

So, how come I read:

Pope suspected of Madeleine kidnappings

I always thought he looked a bit shifty.

A fish out of water

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Being a scientist amongst historians can be entertaining. This afternoon, I passed a colleague of mine reading a book about experiences of childhood during WW2. I noted the title.
‘Is this me, having a biological background, but the word evacuation…’
I didn’t finish my sentence.

My last rolo?

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

I never leave my TV on standby. It is one of those things that is so ingrained in me, I just can’t let it sleep with the red light aglow. Think of the carbon footprint!
Tonight, however, my TV is on standby. It will be for a whole 24 hours.
There’s a programme on tomorrow evening that [...]

Spiders#2

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

This sizeable fella’ lives in my kitchen. He’s made a little home for himself behind the back door. I saw him close up for the first time last night.

I managed to identify him this afternoon. They don’t call him the Giant House Spider for nothing.
Tegenaria duellica. I’m going to call him Teg.

The importance of thumbs

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

My thumb hurts. You know this. The cut on my thumb whilst chopping onions really did go deeper than I’d first thought. The problem isn’t so much the original gash, but the subsequent re-opening of it when I’m trying to do stuff. Tying my hair back, washing the dishes, carrying boxes, that sort of thing.
I [...]

Half and half

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Today I had arranged to have lunch with a colleague. I don’t get to see him much these days, and having a meal at lunchtime rather than a sandwich meant I didn’t have to cook properly this evening.
I was hovering with my decision when my colleague ordered a proper valleys tradition. Half and half. Well, [...]

When is a geek not a geek?

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

I’m a geek. Out and Proud. ‘Embrace your inner geek’ is a favourite phrase of mine. Believe me when I say there isn’t much inner to my geekness.
Yes, I can give the Latin name of six species of barnacle.
Chthalamus montagui, Chthalamus stellatus, Elminius modestus, Semibalanus balanoides, Balanus balanus, Balanus perforatus.
Yes, I do insist on [...]
