On telling stories

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

This was the only academic session at BTB this summer. The one you missed. I found it interesting although not quite what I was expecting, but I’m glad I went.
I need to keep a closer eye on what the storytelling centre in Glamorgan gets up to. The more stories I tell, and more I [...]

Make your own story

Friday, July 20th, 2007

My mind was constructing a blog post for you whilst I was sitting on the train tonight. Knowing I’d forget the main thread I jotted down a few words to remind me. It then occurred to me that the words, by themselves, were enough.
Nutter. Mac. Trains. Fart. Welsh. Paris. Prostitute.
Construct your own story. You’ve got [...]

I have just spoken with a very excited Nain.

Bumper blues

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

So, the damage isn’t as serious as it could have been. The bumper is cracked, there’s a swish of red paint, there’s a dent or two. The car is safe to drive and the bumper won’t fall off, but the bumper needs replacing, a cost of £300-400 they claim, we’ll see. My neighbour will foot [...]

Everybody needs good neighbours

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

The doorbell rings. I wrap my dressing gown around me and trundle to the door. Imagine my surprise, nay delight, to discover a tall, dark, handsome stranger, a fireman nonetheless, filling my doorway.
Hello indeed.
I am suddenly aware of my lack of dress and tousled, unkempt hair.
He spoils the pseudo-fantasy quickly, apologising profusely that he’d [...]

Losing one’s memory

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Overheard at lunchtime:
‘Oh, I’ve found your thingy’
‘What thingy?’
‘You know, whatever it was you were looking for yesterday. I can never remember the name of those things.’
‘Sorry, you’ve lost me’
‘Computer whatsit, you put stuff on it.’
‘Oh, that blasted thing, I’m forever losing it.’
‘What are the damned things called again?’
‘Memory sticks’
The irony, it seems, was entirely lost [...]

It started with a…

Monday, July 16th, 2007

…headache yesterday, mid afternoon. After a ludicrously early night I thought it had cleared. Then about nine this morning, the grumbling headache returned. Swiftly followed by a bout of light headed dizziness, and a little nausea. I began to feel tetchy, agitated, on edge. Happily, I managed to curb my desire to swear at small [...]

They expect me to be a grown up?

Friday, July 13th, 2007

My parents have been away. A month around France and Italy and a few other countries along the way. They return with a gift. A beautiful pashmina scarf in mostly turquoise colours. It is really lovely, but being me, I’m not sure when I’d wear it.
Mam still hasn’t given up on making me girly.
I open [...]

It’s not just food

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

We started with wine.
Followed by, nearly out of date, gently overcooked chicken, roasted with slightly aromatic, wilted tarragon. Sauteed new potatoes and very old onion with drying out spring greens and floppy purple sprouted broccoli. Forgotten roasted pepper stuffed with couscous that remained… forgotten.
Two bottles later…
It’s not just food.
It’s Flossie, clearing out the fridge, [...]
