On distractions

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

I have much to do. I am sitting in my dressing gown with my hair still wet, an empty bag lying on my bed and packing and sorting, not to mention general tidying left to be done. I leave in just over two hours.
But all I can do is sit here, totally distracted by the [...]

Oooh. Shiny

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Look what I’ve just found:
mediæval
≈ (I’ve always loved these…)
λequals (PMC will be happy)
môr
Yes I’ve found the symbols section in the new update.
Although they don’t have circumflexes over w or y. They’re only vowels in Welsh, apparently.
[Sigh]

The kindness of strangers

Friday, January 25th, 2008

As the doors of the deli opened this morning, the telephone rang.
I opened with ‘Do you have a few minutes, I have an unusual request’
Thankfully the shop was quiet as I explained my plan. He took the details.
‘Do you have any idea what the weather is like up here, it’s torrential rain’ he complained, although [...]

A lady’s legacy

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Earlier in the week BGJ came around for tea. We were talking about being able to converse at length about the most unusual of topics. I claimed I had recently managed 400 or so words on sharpening pencils. He seemed impressed.
‘Bet you can’t write an essay on The influence of Margaret Thatcher on Welsh politics‘, [...]

Lessons in life #22

Think twice before blogging about the colourful consequences of excessive beetroot consumption.

An infinite pink

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Beetroot is marvellous stuff. It seems to have an extraordinary amount of concentrated pink. I topped and tailed the beetroot, and cut them into quarters. Deep pink covered the knife and chopping board leaving my kitchen looking like a crime scene. I rinsed them, splashing pink water across the kitchen. I par-boiled them, allowing more [...]

So good they named it thrice?

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Lunchtime today a colleague and I were looking up textures on Google maps. There are great ones of mountains and deltas and cityscapes. When the whole area uses the same roofing material it looks great, you get crisp shadows and different shades of the same colour.
I was marvelling at the flat rooftops of Sousse when [...]

Shhh

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Don’t look now, but I think the Sun is out.
There are shadows, and everything.
Wow!

On missing you

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Damn.
You’re out.
I’d forgotten.
It would be really antisocial of me to call you, however much I need to hear your voice. It has just been a really weird few days. I’ve been mostly OK, there’s just an ache whenever I think of you, which is quite a lot. I’ll be alright. I usually am.
This melancholy [...]

All flagged out

Monday, January 21st, 2008

From my window I can see a row of three flags, closely raised. Lately they have been particularly active. Either that or I have spent longer than usual gazing out of the window thinking of you.
For inanimate objects, flags have many of the qualities of living things. I like to watch them as their movements [...]
