This morning was warm. The sun was in welcome contrast to yesterday’s dull greyness, despite the fact that the forecast had promised more of the same. It wasn’t so. Throughout the morning the sun eased spring into the grateful ground.
Shortly after lunch the sky darkened. The promised rain fell all at once. A heavy shower [...]

It isn’t often I feel intimidated but sometimes, I do. What frustrates me more is when I feel intimidated with no reason.
This afternoon a group of adults with special needs came in to chat. Mostly I’m pretty good with them. I can talk at many levels and am pretty chatty and easy going, but sometimes, [...]

There’s something intensely patronising about strangers calling me love. Family, yes. Friends, yes. Those that I love, absolutely – those that I am aquainted with, I will tolerate it.
Strangers, not so much.
One of the problems with working with vast numbers of the general public is that many of them will throw such comments around with little consideration. [...]

There’s a saying told to me long ago by Mrs Jones as we were walking to her farm. It is meant to predict how wet a summer we’ll have. It goes:
If the Oak is out before the Ash we’ll only have a splash, but if the Ash is out before the Oak, we’re in for [...]

The Delightful Receptionist has had a promotion. She now resides upstairs as The Delightful Librarian. She wanted me to call her The Hot Librarian, but for that she first needs to wear glasses pulled down to the edge of her nose and untie her hair so that it tumbles in a cascade across her shoulders.
I [...]

This morning I visited the staff toilets that I don’t usually frequent. There is an odd phenomenon whereby the male toilets are spacious with several cubicles, handbasins and mirrors but the ladies’ loos are quite different. There is one corner cubicle squashed between rooms and corridors with a tiny corner handbasin – no mirror. Everywhere is within [...]

Whilst at University I worked behind a bar. It was very much a locals pub rather than a studenty one, and I worked on Sunday afternoons which were pretty quiet. I’d usually be in sole charge of the bar and lounge, whilst the landlord and his wife got quietly sozzled in the corner. There were a [...]

I would call, but I know you’re busy trying to Get Stuff Done. It’s just that I’m sitting next to you, leaning into your shoulder, your hand in mine.
I found myself absent mindedly stroking the back of your hand. Then my fingertips softly tracing their way over your fingers and back along the underside to [...]

Tonight I finished a bottle of gin.
If I were you, I wouldn’t worry much about my over indulgence of alcohol. The bottle has been open for many months – I didn’t gulp the whole lot down in one go.
It was as I sank the last drop, however, that I realised: I’ll have to buy another [...]

This afternoon I found myself looking out of the window. I was watching the birds. As there was nobody in the building for much of the day I hadn’t put the heating on and by mid afternoon it was cold. The chill deepened and I gave in, kicking the stove into life.
There were a few [...]
