Pros and Cons

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

There is a noisy exhibit just beyond the wall of the office opposite my desk. At half term it is busy. The loud popping noise and non-stop tuneless attempts at melody become rather tiresome after a very short while.
‘I wish that would stop’ I commented to a technician colleague who sits opposite me.
‘On the other [...]

On sharing a house #8

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Last night I emptied the dishwasher, filled it and emptied it again later in the evening.
Ordinarily I would be frustrated by the fact that I was clearing up after everybody else.
I wasn’t. I was just grateful that I was home long enough for a full run of the dishwasher before I fell asleep.

On sharing a house #7

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

We ended up with some felt-tip marks in the kitchen. One of the housemates was concerned they wouldn’t come off as they were the product of a waterproof marker.
I mentioned that I’ll get some acetone from work and that should do the trick.
MAC turned to me: ‘One of the girls probably has some nail-varnish remover somewhere‘.
Half way through [...]

Things I never expected to overhear #43

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

But it is funny, Mummy.
No. Pooing in your knickers isn’t funny.
Maybe not, but overhearing your conversation this lunchtime certainly was.

On emergency measures

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

It has been a busy few weeks and I have hardly spent any time at home. Firstly a good few days in Glasgow with you, then off to the conference. Since I’m back I haven’t had a quiet evening where I am at home or not working until late.
It is no surprise then that I [...]

Colouring in

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

In the last week I have spent rather a lot of time on trains. Flicking through a house magazine left behind by a previous traveller I found the reason paint colour names exist. Forget Cheeky wink, Lulu and Rodeo drive, Mischief is the way forward.
It is just a shame it is pink.

On emissions

So methane is a worse greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide?
Yes.
And cows produce loads of methane?
About 150 litres each, every day, yes.
And burning methane produces CO2?
Yes.
So, why don’t we fit pilot lights to all the cows?
For making me laugh yesterday, thanks Toby.

On time management

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I knew I’d been busy of late. There are deadlines and stuff to be delivered and not enough time in every day. But I hadn’t realised quite how bad it had got until last night. In the office, at ten o’clock, I was searching through my notebook for some minutes of a meeting I took [...]

Highs and lows

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Lunchtime I headed out for a sandwich. It was freezing cold but I needed a banana for reasons I won’t go into, so I donned my warm coat and wrapped myself in my scarf.
Walking down the street of the city centre I noticed that the sky seemed bluer than usual, the sun felt warmer on my [...]
