It really is making a mountain out of a molehill to call Christmas Mountain a mountain. If I remember right, the verticle elevation is about 250 ft.
Physical therapy appointment today was interesting. The PT flexed and pushed my legs in all kinds of directions and determined that I have a level 2 tear in my MCL (about 50-75% torn), a possible nick or tear in my medial meniscus and a possible (though unlikely) partial dislocation of my patella. The tear in the MCL was a little scary. He pushed on my left knee from the outside, and it stopped after a bit. He pushed on my right knee from the outside, and it didn't really stop. (Although he claims that he felt it stop a little, which gives him hope that it's not completely torn. Plus usually it hurts more and there's more swelling.) He even was hopeful enough that I actually might ski again this season, since a level 2 tear usually takes 4-6 weeks to heal. Depends on what the screwy weather does, I suppose.
And, of course, he gave me a bunch of homework. Lots of exercises to do... Oh well, it'll be a good warm-up for when I start seeing a personal trainer in April.
Posted by Mija at February 13, 2004 10:24 AMGood to hear that the appointment went well. I am sure you will be up and at 'em in a couple of weeks. And good for you on the personal trainer as well. I opted for a personal trainer rather than physical therapy (a while back) and it was great. I got to the point where I got leg press over 400lbs! Yes, I rock.
XOXO Michelle
Posted by: Michelle at February 13, 2004 03:24 PMIt sounds nasty, Mija. Hope you get well soon, and can get some more skiing in before the end of the season. I also feel obliged on behalf of my mother, and physiotherapists everywhere, to tell you to do you exercises: they really do help.
Posted by: Simon at February 13, 2004 06:19 PMYes, Michelle, you do indeed rock! My mother recently started weight-lifting and she's proud that she can leg press 50 lbs...
Mij!! I repeat, I didn't guess from your email that it was you who had been done in by Mount Doom (until I read your blog) and then I was even more taken aback when I saw you in a knee brace.
I'm beginning to suspect that you underplay your ailments, whereas I am quite the opposite and make a big drama out of every little oops and owie. I never thought I'd grow up to be a drama queen. Alas, my poor friends...
Sorry to hear it's a level II tear, but of course glad it doesn't seem to be a level III, and glad that you got prompt medical attention (I once injured myself doing some taekwondo and didn't go to a doctor for over a year, wasn't much they could do at that point -- still, I did enjoy physical therapy and the ensuing massages).
Yet another reason to consider a late spring skiing trip to Tahoe!!!
PS - I have potential dates for December and the following March in case it works to coordinate time share schedules...
