The Strange Case of Upper Lane

This road sign has been bothering me for a while

Upper Lane is in upper case, except that the first letter seems to be lower case. Or so it would be in most typefaces:

But then some sifting around, in amongst the type trays, turns up a few faces where the capital U does have a spur, bottom left.

Ohhhh no. The ones with a spur are wrong and your initial opinion is correct. Look, I've still got a fair way to go in setting the world to rights without people going round sticking on spurs where they shouldn't be. On the other hand, the wall and the greenery are pretty near perfect.
