good when a plan comes together

I get these visions, clearly, with plenty detail, which I scribble down in various notebooks. You might remember this one:

this is how it turned out:

I now interrupt this seemingly endless stream of stills from the film with a photograph of something completely different

but before you can crush any whites...

...you've got to work the dancers

and now with crushed white

Always a danger when you overexpose - you crush the whites and nothing is recoverable. Better to underexpose and crush the blacks, at least some detail is recoverable in post-production. However in this case I didn't want to recover anything of the white so I opened the aperture a couple of stops and crushed it. Just thought you might like to know

as the second day of filming approaches

I'm trying to make sense of the story, but without being too literal. Got to leave gaps. Got to allow the imagination to linger. Don't answer all the questions. But answer enough for it to make sense. A tricky balance.

With a dance film it's hard to know for certain what's going to work, there are few guidelines to go by - it's not theatre, it's not simply dance and it's not just film. So I shoot more than I need, under the pretext that if you ain't shot it you ain't got it.

so Aphrodite comes out the sea and they adorn her, not unreasonably, with sea jewels. As indeed have I.
