A Childhood Icon Gone
Woke to the news that Richard Whiteley died last night from pneumonia.
I remember him as a kid back home, presenting the news on Yorkshire Television's Calendar before moving onto Countdown, the programme you watched instead of going to lectures or studying for those finals 
He'll be missed, and Countdown will never quite be the same again.
