At last, the car's running on all 4 cylinders 
Okay, it's still not right. The timing is waaaaay wrong, the idle and water temp showing that it's trying to run away with itself. And the brakes don't like being left for 4 weeks standing. Taking the car round the block was a little scary 
But, as Ian pointed out, it's running well enough to get me to and from work and local places. So, weather permitting, next Saturday I'll spend a bit of time, refreshed from a week at work, sorting out the fine tuning. Of course, if it is raining, I'll just go and pop over to me garage
